Combined transport is the preferred system for eco-friendly freight transport. Hupac sees its task in providing the logistics industry with a reliable, competitive network for intermodal transport. The central challenge is efficient management, because eco-friendly transport must be neither more expensive nor of lower quality than comparable offers.
Combined road/rail transport was introduced in Europe 50 years ago and is now an important alternative for freight transport. The system integrates different transport carriers into a single transport chain, thus combining the advantages of each.
Intermodal transport combines different means of transport: road, rail, sea and air. In unaccompanied combined transport (UCT), the loading units are carried by road or by vessel to the transhipment terminals. There they are loaded onto trains to continue the journey by rail, generally over long international distances.
Hupac has its own fleet of around 9,100 rail platforms, allowing the company to operate freely in the market and respond rapidly to new demands. Since 2010 Hupac has been a certified ECM (Entity in Charge of Maintenance) and takes full responsibility for the maintenance of the wagons.
Inside the Terminal Busto Arsizio-Gallarate, the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) rail portals are in operation and provide a solution for automated train inspection, identification and inventory – an important feature that helps to handle the growing traffic volume.
